Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
AHRQ plays many important roles related to chronic illness including diabetes. It is the health services research arm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), complements the biomedical research mission of its sister agency, the National Institutes of Health. It is also home to research centers that specialize in major areas of health care research. You will find many valuable resources at this site including information important for evidence-based care.
Albert Einstein College of Medicine Diabetes Research Center
The Center was established in 1977, with the award of a Diabetes Research and Training Center grant from the National Institutes of Health. The mission of the Diabetes Research and Training Center is to support the growth and development of a scientific base devoted to basic and clinical research related to the causes and treatment of diabetes and it's complications. It also aims to support translational research targeted to the prevention and treatment of diabetes and it's complications, especially in minority and underserved populations. This Center provides a pilot and feasibility program to support initiation of research programs in diabetes-related areas that are both biomedical and behavioral.

Diabetes Research
The American Diabetes Association is a leader in diabetes research. Over the years they have increased their financial support for diabetes research from $18 million in 1999 to $46.4 million in 2006.
Diabetes Research and Training Centers' (DRTC) Prevention and Control Divisions
Each center includes a Prevention and Control Division that focuses on diabetes translation, including diabetes education, professional training, and community outreach. The researchers develop and demonstrate innovative approaches to providing quality diabetes care. Several of the centers carry out programs onsite in model demonstration units, while others conduct their programs in community settings. The Prevention and Control Divisions offer continuing education seminars, workshops in state-of-the-art diabetes management for professionals, an array of tested evaluation and assessment instruments, and professional expertise in developing and implementing diabetes programs in a variety of settings. Each center offers a range of educational materials, including videotapes, curricula, and program guides for health professionals.
Diabetes Stepping Up to the Plate: An Education Program Focused on Food Portioning Skills
The objective of the study was to assess the effectiveness of a 3-month diabetes education class focused on food portioning skills through reduction in weight, hip circumference, waist circumference, body mass index, and improvement in a written knowledge test on food portions and a test on food portioning skills.
