Diabetes: A Family Matter - Latest News

Social Networking Site is up and Ready to go!

The Diabetes: A Family Matter Social Network is up and running. Join now to connect with others in the Appalachian region! It's free and open to anyone! You can access the social network by clicking on the Communicate link in the top navigation of any page within the Diabetes: A Family Matter website.

If you are new to the site you will first need to create a user account. To do so, click Register and fill out and submit the online registration form. Be sure to choose a Username and Password that you can easily remember (Feel free to resuse a Username and Password that you are already using for a different website). You will recieve an email confirming your email address. Once confirmed, you will then be able to set up your personal profile, search for and add friends, upload files, start a blog, send private messages, and create and join social groups.

New Fotonovella Added

In the hectic times leading to the launch of the Diabetes: A Family Matter project, we inadvertently overlooked an important part of the Toolkit: the fotonovella to Family Support for Those with Sugar Diabetes. This is a companion piece to the other work, Living with Sugar Diabetes, which has been online since launch. The two fotonovellas are intended to present two sides of the metaphorical "coin"—a negative situation (Living with Sugar Diabetes) and a positive situation (Family Support for Those with Sugar Diabetes).

We apologize for the mistake.

Click to view the fotonovellas section of our Toolkit website to download both works.

Social Networking Development and Customization Continues

The web development team continues to tweak the design and functionality of the new social networking functionality in the “Communicate” section. It is currently possible to make blog posts, create/join/discuss in groups, add friends, send private messages, and upload files for the community. We are striving to make things ever more user friendly, but even so, users already familiar with sites such as MySpace and Facebook should have no problems.

To follow progress, check out developer Joshua Ramsey's blog at http://www.diabetesfamily.net/communicate/pg/blog/ramseyj.

Feel free to register now! Everything is working great, and the more users interacting, the better the project will be!

Diabetes: A Family Matter Social Network Installed!

We have just installed our social networking software, running on the popular Elgg open-source platform. It is fully functional, and accepting registrations now. Bear in mind, however, that we will be spending the coming weeks configuring the site, adding new functionality as time progresses.

As it stands, the design is still the default that is installed with the Elgg platform. We will soon have its design matching the core of our site. Keep in mind that all of your activity will remain intact through all our redesigning and configuring.

We hope you enjoy! Let's start communicating.

Diabetes: A Family Matter Dissemenation and Evaluation Project Workshops

The final "Diabetes: A Family Matter Dissemenation and Evaluation Project" Workshop will be taking place on August 11th, 2010. For more details, please visit our Conferences and Workshops section.

Diabetes: A Family Matter Site Updates

We are in the process of updating the site, adding new content, as well as making it a bit more appealing with new photos and minor stylistic changes. The largest change you will notice will be the home page, which we have "opened up" considerably, allowing it to "breathe."

We hope the changes make your visits more enjoyable and user friendly.

Conference Information Added

We have just added a series of Powerpoint presentations from our first conference, the one which lauched the Diabetes: A Family Matter project back in March.
