Athens County is located in southeastern Ohio and extends west from the Ohio River. It is approximately 509 square miles, with 507 square miles consisting of land and 2 square miles consisting of water. The total population living in Athens County in 2003 was 64,380 with a density of about 127 people per square mile. In a 2000 census, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that the median income for a household in the county was $27, 322 and the median income for a family was $39,785. About 14.00% of families and 27.40% of the population fall below the poverty line, and the unemployment rate was 8.4% in 2009. Ohio University is located here and is considered one of the highest employers in the county.

According to a community health assessment performed by the Appalachian Rural Health Institute in 2006, there were 116 physicians in Athens County which include medical doctors and osteopathic doctors. There were also 10 general dentistry practices in the Athens area. The Athens County Health Department provides many services to local residents.

This group provides monthly diabetes education, medical updates, and continuing education credit to diabetes educators and others working with and interested in diabetes. The group meets quarterly and is free. Contact Carol Merkle or Ann Brieck for more information.
