Brown County is located on the southern border of Ohio along the Ohio River. The county consists of 495 square miles, with 492 square miles of land and three square miles of water. In 2007, the Ohio Department of Development reported that the population of Brown County was 43,956 with 98% of the population being predominately white. The median age of the population is 35.4 years of age and median household income for Brown County is $38,303. Approximately 8.8% of the county’s families and 11.6% of the residents fall below the poverty line. In May 2010, the unemployment rate was 11.8%. The county provides its children with 18 public schools and one non-public school.
According to Ohio County Profiles, Brown County has about 30 physicians (MDs and DOs), one hospital with 127 beds, and seven nursing homes with a total of 830 available beds. Adults with employer-based insurance account for 55.7% of the population and children with employer-based insurance account for 54.4% of the population.
Major employers in the county include Brown County General Hospital, Eastern Local Board of Education, Milacron Inc, Ohio Valley Manor, RUHL Local Board of Education, Stanley Works, Surgical Appliance Industries, and Western Brown Local Board of Education.
