Lawrence County is the southernmost county in the state of Ohio. It occupies 457 square miles with two of those square miles being water. In 2007, there were a reported 62,609 people residing in the county with 96.55% of the residents being predominately white. In Lawrence County 52% of the people live in the urban setting and 48% live in rural areas outside of the villages. The median income for a household is $33,138 and 18.9% of the population falls below the poverty line. The unemployment rate in Lawrence County is 8.4%. The median age of a resident residing in Lawrence County is 37.6 years old. In Lawrence County, 25.7% of the residents are employed by education, health, and social services, 15.1% are employed in retail trade, and 14.1% work in manufacturing. The population without insurance is around 14%. There are 24 public schools and 2 non-public schools available to the residents. In Lawrence County, there is one radio station and one daily newspaper.

Health Services

Lawrence County has 41 physicians which includes medical doctors and osteopathic doctors. The one hospital in Lawrence County closed in 2001. A number of hospital options are available for residents in adjoining Ohio counties and across the river in Kentucky and West Virginia. In Lawrence County, health services include the Lawrence County Health Department in Ironton, Holzer Clinic in Proctorville, Our Lady of Bellefonte Urgent Care and Primary Care in Ironton, Three Gables Surgery Center in Proctorville, Tri-State Dialysis Center in Chesapeake, King’s Daughters Family Care Center in Ironton, Tri-State Physicians Network in Coal Grove, and the Community Action Organization (CAO) Family Medical Centers in Ironton, Coal Grove, South Point, and Chesapeake.

Some nursing home facilities in the area include: Sunset Nursing Center, Sanctuary of the Ohio Valley, River’s Bend Health Care LLC, and Jo-Lin Health Center. There are nine dentists practicing in Lawrence County.
