Perry County is located in southeast Ohio and is one of the poorest counties in the state. The total area of the county is 413 square miles. In 2007, the population was 34,839 with 98.7% of that population being predominately white. The median age of a Perry County resident is 35 years old. There are 17 public schools and two non-public schools available to residents. The unemployment rate in Perry County is 12.8% and 9.4% of family incomes fall below the poverty level. There is one radio station located in Perry County.

Perry County employs 13 physicians (MDs and DOs) and two dentists. No hospital exists in Perry County and local residents travel to adjoining Ohio counties for most health care services. Eight nursing homes with a combined total of 800 beds are available. Other health services in Perry County include: Autumn Healthcare of Somerset, Perry Behavioral Health, Genesis Homecare, Family Health Services, Six County Inc., and the Perry County Health Department. Fitness centers available to residents in Perry County include: Curves for Women and Let’s Center.
