Icebreakers: What Are They?

Photo of a group session

Ice-breakers can be used at the very beginning of any session or meeting. The purpose of an icebreaker is to, you guessed it, break the ice and get people warmed up and comfortable in the context of the session or meeting. Often, you or other group members can refer back to things discovered in the icebreaker in the meeting or lesson. We have tried to create icebreakers that are meaningful to your work for each volunteer SUGAR Helper training session.

Feel free to use these icebreakers in any way you choose. It is, after all, your group and your community. You know what will work best and when it will work best!

Additionally, volunteer SUGAR Helpers might want to use these ice-breakers with any community groups where they want to engage them in activities linked with the Diabetes: A Family Matter program. These can serve to get people acquainted and talking prior to starting the planned activity.
